Items come in several types:

Weapons (equip to weapon slot)
  Have damage_min and damage_max. Damage types: pistol, rifle, melee.
  Equip: equip <weapon>. Unequip: unequip weapon.

Armor (equip to armor slot)
  Provides Damage Resistance (DR) that reduces incoming damage.
  Equip: equip <armor>. Unequip: unequip armor.

Aid items (consumables)
  - Stimpak — restores HP
  - RadAway — reduces radiation
  - Nuka-Cola — restores some HP
  - Purified Water — restores 15 HP
  - Canned Dog Food — restores 10 HP (+5 rads)
  Use with: use <item>. Consumed on use.

Chems (temporary buffs)
  Chems grant powerful temporary effects that last 60-120 seconds.
  - Jet — +20% hit chance (60s)
  - Psycho — +25% damage (60s)
  - Buffout — +3 melee damage (90s)
  - Med-X — +3 Damage Resistance (90s)
  - Mentats — +10 Science, +10 Lockpick (120s)
  Use with: use <chem>. Using the same chem again refreshes duration.
  Buffs expire automatically and you'll be notified in combat.

Junk
  Loot found in containers and on enemies. Sell to the trader for caps.
  Examples: Duct Tape, Sensor Module, Gold Watch, Military Circuit Board.

Key items
  Quest-related items. Keep them until you turn in the mission.

Containers
  Found in dungeons. Use open <container> to access contents.
  Some are locked — you need sufficient Lockpick skill or the
  Hacker perk (for electronic locks) to open them.

Inventory management:
  inventory (or i) — view carried items and equipped gear
  get <item>        — pick up an item
  drop <item>       — drop an item
  equip <item>      — equip weapon or armor
  unequip weapon|armor — remove equipped gear

You have 20 inventory slots. Each item takes 1 or more slots.
